The vigilante action film is a sequel to the 1996 film “Indian” and is directed by Shanmugam Shankar. Kamal Haasan plays Senapathy, an ageing freedom fighter turned vigilante, with an ensemble cast including Siddharth, S. J. Suryah and Rakul Preet Singh.
The movie follows Senapathy, who returns from abroad to aid a team of people who have been exposing corrupt politicians in the country through videos on the internet. Senapathy then targets corrupt officials who have embezzled lakhs of rupees from the government. Due to its final length of over six hours, the film was split into two parts with the latter part “Indian 3” currently being scheduled to release in 2025.
Chitra Aravindhan and his friends run a “Barking Dogs” YouTube channel focused on political satire, but when a young woman dies by suicide due to corruption, they shift their focus to demanding justice. The friends launch a campaign called “Come Back Indian” because they believe that only Senapathy, the protagonist of the first film in the series, can stop systemic corruption.
Senapathy returns to India from Taiwan and begins to target corrupt officials who have stolen from the government, first in Gujarat and Odisha and then encouraging his followers to do the same in other states. Chitra Aravindhan and his friends start monitoring their own parents for signs of corruption, leading to some surprising discoveries. Chitra Aravindhan’s initial enthusiasm for Senapathy’s mission turns to rage and disappointment when his own father is revealed to be corrupt, leading to the arrest of his father and the suicide of his mother.
Chitra Aravindhan then starts a campaign against Senapathy called “Go Back Indian.” Senapathy is arrested but escapes from court, and a sequel to “Indian 2” is in development for release in 2025. The film is visually striking, with great cinematography, sets, use of AI and prosthetic work, the story is not strong like Indian part 1, Sivaji & Aniyan.
Kamal Haasan match up in their scenes together. Despite Kamal Hasan’s strong performance, some fans found the film to be an outdated and tedious execution of an otherwise enjoyable story. Fans have taken to praise Kamal Haasan’s performance, calling it “unparalleled” and “a sight to behold.” The title card for Kamal Haasan, with Anirudh Ravichander’s music, has turned out to be a ‘paisa vasool’ moment for fans.
Kamal Haasan delivers a strong performance as Senapathy, the vigilante from the original film, while Siddharth outdoes him in some scenes. The film is entertaining, but it fails to live up to the first film in the series, with a weak screenplay, and the absence of writer Sujatha is felt. The film has postive reviews and is set to have a solid opening, with director Shankar’s inspiration and vision being the standout.
The film tries to combine old and new themes to appeal to a younger audience, but it does not quite work, and the endless pre-climax chase scene detracts from the film. Kamal Haasan delivers a strong performance as Senapathy, and Siddharth also shines in his role as Chitra Aravindhan. Bobby Simha & Vivek perfectly fit as cops. Rakul Preet Singh & Jagan did good job. The film is entertaining, but it fails to live up to the first film in the series.
Anirudh Ravichander’s music is all about sound, and the melody is only occasionally catchy, but his background score is superlative. The album lacks repeat value, and it’s doubtful if it will ever join the evergreen list like most of Shankar’s albums. Anirudh tried different flavors (borrowed ideas), and it works partially. Three out of six songs worked instantly. The background score work well. But we miss you ARR.
“Calendar Song” top notch in the movie. Kadharlz remaining us boys Maro Maro song. “Paaraa” represents a noteworthy collaboration between Anirudh Ravichander, director Shankar, lyricist Pa Vijay, and Kamal Haasan. The song left audiences impressed with its powerful anti-colonial theme.
“Neelorpam” and “Paaraa” did not feature in the film. The album features six songs written by Pa. Vijay, Kabilan Vairamuthu, Thamarai, Arivu, Rokesh and Anirudh himself, with two of them were released as singles.
Audience all are praised the cinematography by Ravi Varman and the work. The cinematography has been workout well for being very predictable and bland, and some have called the film one of director Shankar’s best visual treat. Have praised the film’s action sequences and the performances.
Director Shankar’s films are known for their grand visuals and extensive use of cutting-edge technology. The movie’s technical crew also includes editor A. Sreekar Prasad, production designer T. Muthuraj, and visual effects supervisor V. Srinivas Mohan. The film’s script and dialogues were co-written by Shankar, Jeyamohan, Kabilan Vairamuthu, and Lakshmi Saravanakumar.
The film’s artwork has been given visual treat for its action packed storyline and problematic aspects of its narrative, especially the portrayal of a person with a disability.
The film’s trailer was very well received, with some calling “Indian 2” one of the best vigilante thrillers of our time
