VANANGAAN Movie Review by MATHIOLI RAJAA

“Vanangaan” Movie produced by Suresh Kamatchi under the banner of V House Productions, Directed by Bala, Music by GV Prakash Kumar, Back Ground Music by Sam CS, Starring by Arun Vijay, Roshini Prakash, Ritha, Mysskin, Samuthirakani, Chayadevi, Cheranraj, Bala Sivaji.

The story of Vangaan follows the lives of an happy-go-lucky brother-sister duo, Kotti (Arun Vijay) and Devi (Ritha), living in Kanyakumari. Kotti, who lost his parents in the tsunami, has been raising Devi, who also lost her parents, like his own sister since childhood. Kotti, a deaf and mute differently-abled person, does small jobs for a living. Devi works in a tattoo studio. Kotti expresses his emotions using his hands in sign language and is a man who cannot stay calm when he sees injustices happening in front of his eyes. He beats up and thrashes people he believes are bad. This puts his well-wishers, including his sister, in trouble. Meanwhile, Tina (Roshini Prakash), a tourist guide who speaks multiple languages and earns a living, falls in love with Kotti and keeps following him. Kotti first beats up a group of men who physically assault a group of transgenders and saves them, and the next time, he beats up a bar owner who verbally abuses a priest in a local church where his sister is praying. Believing that Kotti will be alright if he has a permanent job, his sister Devi, with the help of the priest, gets Kotti a job as a watchman at an orphanage where many blind people, including children and women, live. At that time, an unpleasant incident, which cannot be spoken outside, is happening in the orphanage, perpetrated by a group of inhuman men. Kotti witnesses three lustful men trying to take advantage of the blind women and decides to take law into his own hands to punish the culprits. His approach also troubles Devi. Is the law waiting to catch him? How does this affect his relationship with his loving sister? What happens next is the rest of the story.

Arun Vijay’s portrayal of Kotti is exceptional. As a deaf and mute person, Arun Vijay has given his all to this role of contradictions in the film. He brings credibility to the physically challenged character and his action scenes are breathtaking. Ritha, as the loving sister Devi, has delivered a fantastic performance, understanding her character and competing with Arun Vijay. Roshini Prakash, as the lover Tina, has a character that is not well-etched, and she is only trying to woo Kotti in the first half of the film. The energetic and unique performances of director Mishkin, as Judge Kubera, and director Samuthirakani, as a police special officer, add strength to the film’s second half. G. V. Prakash Kumar’s music is okay. Sam CS’s background score and R. B. Gurudev’s cinematography angles and Silva’s stunt scenes have added extra strength to the film. Editor Sathish Surya has made the first half a bit dragging, but he has increased the excitement in the second half. However, the sexual assaults on women should have been handled a bit more carefully and responsibly.

Director Bala has stuck to his template in Vangaan as well. Almost all the aspects we saw in his film are present here. Vangaan has a unique story and an exciting second half, but the characters remind one of his earlier film Pithamagan. Also, he has once again confirmed that he doesn’t like happy endings. Moreover, in a film that speaks about avoiding looking at the miserable state of disabled women, there is a prolonged scene that graphically depicts such a crime with explicit lust, which is disturbing to watch. Overall, Vangaan, produced by Suresh Kamatchi under V House Productions, is an emotional and thrilling ride that talks about violence against women.
