Kaayal Movie Review by Mathioli Rajaa

“Kaayal” movie produced by Jesu Sundaramaran under the banner of J Studio, Directed by Dhamayanthi, Starring by Anumol, Lingesh, Gayathri, Ramesh Thilak, Swagatha, Isaac & Many others.

“Kaayal” movie is a tragic tale of a mother’s rigid attitude towards her daughter’s love affair due to caste differences. The story revolves around Lingesh (Adithya Tamil) and Kayathri (Thenmozhi), who fall in love despite their different backgrounds. Kayathri’s father (Isaac), a high-ranking police officer, approves of their relationship, but her mother (Anumol), a housewife, objects due to Lingesh’s caste.

Unable to defy her mother’s wishes, Kayathri reluctantly complies, leading to an uncertain future. Meanwhile, Lingesh struggles to cope with the separation. The rest of the film explores the aftermath of Kayathri’s sacrifice and whether Anumol eventually realizes the harm caused by her rigid stance.

The film takes a dramatic turn with Kayathri’s death, and debut director Damayanthi skillfully unfolds the events leading up to and following her demise in a non-linear narrative. The story flows naturally, and a romantic scene between Lingesh and Swagatha before the climax is particularly captivating.

Lingesh shines as a vibrant young man, bringing depth to his character. He convincingly portrays the frustration of a love failure and the hesitation of embracing a second chance at love, delivering a nuanced performance that does justice to his role.

Anumol delivers a flawless performance as Yamuna, captivating audiences with her emotional scenes, particularly in the song sequences set to Ilaiyaraaja’s music and her heart-wrenching grief over her daughter’s death. Swagatha impresses with her energetic performance.

Ramesh Thilak, as the psychiatrist counselor, and Kayathri, as Anumol’s daughter, also bring depth to their roles. However, Isaac’s character as Anumol’s husband feels disconnected from the rest of the story.

The film’s greatest strengths are its cinematography and music. Cinematographer Karthik has skillfully incorporated drone shots throughout the film, capturing breathtaking visuals. Justin’s songs are pleasant to listen to, but they don’t always fit the moments they’re paired with.

“Kaayal” movie story tackles themes of love, caste, and journey, but could have been presented more forcefully. Despite this, the film addresses issues relevant to today’s society, making it a worthwhile watch.
