Karate Kid: Legends Movie Review by MATHIOLI RAJAA
Li Fang (Ben Wang) is a student at the kung fu school run by Master Han (Jackie Chan). When Li’s mother lands a job in the United States, they relocate to America in search of a better life. Adapting to a new school and environment, Li meets Mia (Sadie Stanley), a spirited girl who runs a pizza shop with her father, Victor (Joshua Jackson).
Victor struggles with debt, while Mia faces torment from her ex-boyfriend. Li, who had vowed to his mother not to fight again after a past loss, is drawn into the Five Boroughs Tournament. What happens next? What is Li’s past? And what role does Jackie Chan play in this story? ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ answers all these questions.
The film cleverly weaves together elements from the first four Karate Kid movies and the 2010 version starring Jackie Chan, creating a sense of nostalgia and familiarity. Like the previous installment, this film explores overcoming the fears and challenges of life.
Jackie Chan’s performance is a highlight, as he seamlessly transitions between seriousness and humor. His dialogue, “In life, we need to answer one question: Is this fight worth it? Yes or no?” resonates deeply. Ben Wang brings depth to Li’s character, capturing his struggles with violence, past memories, and unrequited love.
The supporting cast, including Sadie Stanley and Joshua Jackson as Mia and her father, deliver commendable performances. The appearance of Ralph Macchio, who starred in the original Karate Kid, is a nostalgic treat. However, other characters, such as Li’s mother.
The film’s biggest drawback is its lack of distinctiveness, feeling like a reworking of the 2010 version. Rather than exploring themes of life, the movie resorts to being a formulaic action film. Jonathan Entwistle’s direction misses the mark in this aspect, failing to elevate the film beyond its predictable plot.
Karate Kid: Legends meets expectations as an entertaining film that serves as a good pastime.
