“Rajaputhiran” movie produced by K.M Safi under the banner of Cresent Cine Creations directed by Mahaa Kandan Starring by “Ilaya Thilagam” Prabhu, Vetri, Komal Kumar, Krishna Priya, Mansoor Alikhan, R.V. Udayakumar, “Old Joke” Thangadurai, Imman Annachi, Livingston & Many others.
Rajaputhiran, that depict village life with a realistic narrative treatment will always be cherished by audiences. This is especially true for stories set in the past, which tend to receive an even warmer reception. Rajaputhiran attempts to blossom into such a film, capturing the essence of rural life.
The film revolves around the deep bond between a father Chelliah (“Ilaya Thilagam” Prabhu) and son Pattamuthu (Vetri). Pattamuthu starts working as a mediator, delivering money to families of workers employed abroad. However, he soon gets entangled in a web of black money transactions, laundering crores through this illicit operation.
One of the masterminds behind this operation is Linga (Komal Kumar), who rules over Ramanathapuram with an iron fist. Devaraj (Director R.V. Udayakumar), a rival from a neighboring district, seethes with jealousy over Linga’s influence in the syndicate. Determined to bring Linga down, Devraj manipulates Meesai (Livingston), a longtime associate of Linga’s, to further his own agenda.
Some individuals are robbed of large sums of money while in transit, and Meesai takes it upon himself to eliminate these thieves. Meanwhile, after a particular incident, Pattamuthu gains Linga’s favor, which doesn’t sit well with Meesai.
Some days later, Pattamuthu loses the money he was tasked with transporting, and Meesai sees this as an opportunity to strike. When Meesai discovers this, he attempts to kill Pattamuthu. However, Chelliah, Pattamuthu’s father, knew about his son’s involvement with Linga and rushes to the scene.
The rest of the story unfolds as Pattamuthu navigates this treacherous situation, with his father’s arrival adding to the complexity of the plot.
One of the film’s most intriguing aspects is its exploration of the underground money transfer system prevalent in the 1990s, where certain individuals would clandestinely facilitate financial transactions for migrant workers, purporting to deliver remittances to their families. This narrative thread is what makes the film noteworthy and worthy of attention.
Vetri shines as the protagonist, playing a young man from a rural background. Prabhu, as his father, delivers a convincing performance. However, his star power overshadows the film’s realistic narrative treatment.
The movie relies heavily on the Prabhu-Vetri duo, and while their on-screen chemistry works well, it doesn’t quite elevate the film to a unique cinematic experience.
The role played by lead actress Krishna Priya (Poochendu) is new to Tamil cinema very bold character, looks so beautiful and merged with the nativity. She rocks and scored well. But, although the script doesn’t clearly define her character’s profession, her presence is endearing. Komal Kumar, the Kannada actor playing the antagonist. We got wonderful artiste in Kollywood. His performance and body language is remarkable.
The film also features Mansoor Alikhan, R.V. Udayakumar, Livingston, and Imman Annachi in notable roles.
Cinematographer Oliver Deni and art director Iyappan have attempted to visually capture the essence of 1990s Tamil Nadu village life, incorporating modern cinematic trends and deserves appreciation for its detailed work, including the villain’s den, market setup, vintage buses, and traditional homes. VFX has also played a role in enhancing the visuals. Nawful Raja’s background score is effective in certain scenes, while the songs are passable. Lyricists Vairamuthu – Mohan Rajan given soul to the songs by their lyrics.
Rakesh Rocky’s action sequences are well-supported by Kamalakannan’s editing, which effectively complements the film’s pacing. Mahaa Kandan takes credit for writing and directing the film, showcasing his creative vision is excellent manner.
‘Rajaputhiran’ movie struggles to deliver a cohesive cinematic experience due to its reliance on tired tropes, including item songs, formulaic romance, and forced comedic relief. The film’s overly sentimental approach and unoriginal narrative further detract from its impact, leaving the audience underwhelmed and disappointed.
