SMILE MAN Movie Review by MATHIOLI RAJAA

The Smile Man marks the 150th outing for Sarath Kumar, who comes with decades of experience in acting. The film is a crime thriller helmed by director duo Syam and Praveen, Produced by Salildas, Aneesh Haridasan, Anandan T under the banner of Magnum Movies, other starrings are Sri Kumar, Sijaa Rose, Ineya, George Maryan, Priyadarshini Rajkumar, Kumar Natarajan, Baby Azhiya.

The movie is about a CBI officer, Chidambaram Nedumaran (Sarathkumar), who is investigating a murder case in Coimbatore. During the investigation, he suffers from a tragic accident and loses his memory due to the attack of a psycho killer known as “Smile Man”. The killer brutally disfigures the faces of his victims and leaves them with a grotesque smile.

As the story unfolds, we learn that Nedumaran has only one year left before he completely loses his memory due to Alzheimer’s disease. Meanwhile, a series of murders takes place, and the killer leaves the victims with the same gruesome smile. The CBI team, led by Aravind (Sreekumar), seeks the help of Nedumaran, who is an expert in solving such cases.

Despite his memory loss, Nedumaran tries to help Aravind in solving the case. As they delve deeper into the investigation, they face numerous challenges. The killer, Smile Man, seems to be always one step ahead of them. The movie’s plot thickens as Aravind and Nedumaran work together to uncover the identity of the killer and his motives.

The rest of the story revolves around the cat-and-mouse game between the CBI team and Smile Man. Will Aravind and Nedumaran be able to catch the killer and solve the case before it’s too late? Who is Smile Man, and what is his motive behind the brutal murders? The movie’s climax is a thrilling ride that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.

It’s a common trope in psycho-killer movies to have the inspector investigating the case struggle with some personal issues. Similarly, in this movie, Sarathkumar plays the role of CBI officer Chidambaram Nedumaran, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Sarathkumar has portrayed the character’s confusion and determination with finesse, showcasing his solid acting skills through body language. He has also performed well in the action scenes.

However, the presence of Kalaiyarasan has made a significant impact on the thriller. The character of CBI officer Venkatesh, played by Suresh Menon, has been fleshed out properly, making his presence feel. Similarly, Sija Rose has been utilized well in the movie.

The movie’s plot is engaging, and the twists and turns keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The cinematography and background score have added to the overall tension and suspense. However, the underutilization of some characters and the scene of depth in their storylines are notable plusponits to the movie.

Overall, the movie is a gripping thriller that keeps the audience engaged, character development and utilization. Sarathkumar’s performance is a highlight of the movie, and his portrayal of a character struggling with Alzheimer’s disease is noteworthy.

The supporting cast, including George Marian, Ineya as a nurse, Baby Aazhiya as Ineya’s daughter, Sreekumar, Kumar Natarajan, Rajkumar,  Malairajan and Priyadarshini Rajkumar have all delivered impressive performances. The technical team, including Music Composer Kavasakar Avinash, Cinematographer Vikram Mohan, and Editor San Lokesh, have done a great job in creating a thrilling atmosphere that evokes emotions.

However, the directors, Shyam and Praveen, have did great job to create a engaging storyline, and the plot is somewhat predictable. They have done a good job in explaining the motivations and backstory of the killer, Smile Man, which makes the screenplay feel engaging and exciting. The suspense and thrill in the storytelling has made the movie feel a little bit tedious for the audience.

Despite the impressive performances from the cast and the technical team, the movie’s predictable plot and lackluster storytelling have brought down the overall quality of the film. The directors’ failure to create a engaging narrative has made the movie feel like a routine thriller, rather than a gripping and suspenseful one.
