TEST Movie Review by MATHIOLI RAJAA

“Test” Movie releases in NETFLIX, Written, Directed & Produced by S.Sashikanth, Music by Singer Shakthisree Gopalan, Starring by Madhavan, Nayanthara, Siddharth, Meera Jasmine, Kaali Venkat, Aadukalam Murugadoss and others.

The plot of “Test” revolves around three individuals navigating their respective crises. Kumudha (Nayanthara), a devoted teacher, yearns for motherhood; her husband Saravanan (R Madhavan) is driven to revolutionize the fuel industry with his innovative hydrofuel project; and Arjun (Siddharth), Kumudha’s school friend, a struggling cricketer, clings to his last chance to redeem himself in a high-stakes test match.

“Saravanan has taken a high-stakes gamble, borrowing ₹50 lakhs from a loan shark with the expectation of repaying the loan when her approval comes through, which coincidentally falls on the fifth day of the test match. Meanwhile, Kumudha is struggling to come to terms with a traumatic miscarriage a year ago, which has left her emotionally fragile. Her maternal instincts are still raw, and her job as a school teacher only serves as a poignant reminder of what she’s lost. As Saravanan’s financial woes escalate, their marriage teeters on the brink of collapse. To make matters more desperate, Kumudha’s fertility treatment appointment is scheduled for the final day of the match – a costly but potentially life-changing procedure that could finally make her a mother.”

“Meanwhile, Dharmesh (Vinay Varma), a cunning jewellery magnate, has just clinched a lucrative deal: the mastermind behind a notorious match-fixing syndicate has offered him a staggering ₹100 crores to rig the test match. However, the police are under intense pressure to apprehend the syndicate’s kingpin, as they aim to prevent the illicit flow of thousands of crores through match-fixing.

The catalyst that sets this complex web in motion is the loan shark (Aadukalam Murugadoss), who has borrowed money from Dharmesh to lend to Saravanan, thereby entangling the lives of these characters in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse.”

While the premise is intriguing, setting the stage for an emotional exploration of the characters’ moral dilemmas, the execution falters. The first half builds anticipation, but the second half meanders into a tedious thriller mode, prioritizing spot fixing, blackmail, and intimidation over emotional depth. As a result, the characters lose connection, and their performances suffer.

Nayanthara shines amidst the chaos, her understated yet elegant costumes a notable aspect. Sashikanth’s directorial debut shows promise, but the film’s potential is ultimately squandered by its uneven tone and misplaced priorities.

“This film is more than just entertainment; it’s a reflection of real-life struggles. It highlights that even talented individuals like Saravanan and celebrities like Arjun face significant challenges, despite their outward success. Unlike ordinary people who can openly share their struggles, celebrities and talented individuals often feel pressured to maintain a perfect facade, hiding their difficulties from the public eye.

“Although the plot developments are somewhat predictable and occasionally convenient, the film’s engaging elements can be attributed to several astute directorial decisions. For instance, the seamless transitions between scenes, such as the use of a news broadcast about the test match as a thread that weaves through different scenes, effectively heighten the tense atmosphere. Similarly, the clever use of background scores, like Arjun listening to music on his earphones, adds depth to the narrative.

“The decision to enlist Singer Shakthishree Gopalan to compose the music is a bold and inspired creative choice that elevates the film. Her hauntingly beautiful scores, such as the tender humming that wafts through a poignant scene in Arjun and Padma’s bedroom, expertly capture the emotional topography of the characters, adding depth and nuance to their inner lives.”

In a refreshing departure from conventional storytelling, Sashikanth eschews the typical montage sequence to recount Arjun’s rise to fame. Instead, he employs an innovative animated slideshow during the opening credits, which not only showcases the cricketer’s journey but also sets the tone for the film.”

If viewers can grasp the reality portrayed in this movie, they’ll realize it’s not just a “time-pass” film. It’s a thought-provoking exploration of practical life, offering valuable lessons. The cast delivers outstanding performances, with Maddy sir and Siddharth ji showcasing exceptional acting skills. The story is engaging, making this film a must-watch for its authentic portrayal of life’s complexities.”

“The film boasts an impressive cast, with Madhavan delivering an outstanding performance. Meera Jasmine and Nayanthara also shine in their respective roles, and Madhavan’s friend Kaali Venkat adds depth as a supporting actor. However, despite the talented cast, the movie stands great heights in its execution. The storyline is vital, and even fans of Siddharth may find his performance Extraordinary, considering the challenges of portraying this particular character.

Unless you’re a die-hard fan of cricket or the cast members, this movie might be worth your time. Personally, I felt overwhelmed and even added certain sections.”

“The film ‘Test’ endeavors to explore the dynamic shifts in human behavior amidst crisis, a concept that, despite its intriguing premise, fails to effectively materialize on screen.” ”Test’ purports to dissect the fluidity of human response in the face of adversity, yet the execution falls short, rendering the cinematic translation of this concept somewhat inconsequential.”
