The story begins with Kaayalpatinam’s Rangaraja Sakthivel (Kamal Haasan) narrating his life as a gangster, the betrayal by his associates, and the separation of his family. In 1994, Sakthivel is a young gangster in Delhi, aided by his brother Manickam (Naseer), Bhadras (Joju George), and Anbu Raj (Bhagavathi Perumal). During a police encounter set up by rival gangster Sadanand (Mahesh Manjrekar), Sakthivel’s brother Manickam kills an innocent newspaper vendor, Kumaravel. Kumaravel’s children, Amaran (Simbu) and Chandhra (Aishwarya Lakshmi), are separated after their father’s death.

Sakthivel uses Amaran as a shield to escape and later adopts him as his own son, promising to find Chandhra. The story jumps to 2016, where Sakthivel goes to jail after killing the person responsible for his niece’s suicide, entrusting his responsibilities to Amaran. However, Manickam, who feels betrayed, plots against Sakthivel and manipulates Amaran into turning against him.

After Sakthivel’s imprisonment, Amaran befriends their enemies to advance his interests. Upon his release, Sakthivel suspects Amaran’s loyalty and a conflict ensues. Manickam seizes this opportunity to fuel their rivalry, and Amaran is convinced to kill Sakthivel. Sakthivel is presumed dead after being thrown off a cliff in Nepal but is saved by Buddhist monks.

Two years later, Sakthivel returns to Delhi, determined to avenge his betrayal. The rest of the story revolves around Sakthivel’s hunt for his would-be assassins and whether he fulfills his promise to find Chandhra.

Kamal Haasan’s Rangaraja Sakthivel is a masterclass in acting, showcasing his incredible range and versatility. With unbridled energy and passion, he embodies the character, effortlessly transitioning between different stages of life.

From his charming interactions with Jeeva (Abirami) to his tender moments with Indrani (Trisha), Kamal Haasan’s performance is nuanced and captivating. He carries the film’s complex narrative with ease, bringing depth and nuance to the character’s journey.

The film’s themes of loyalty, betrayal, and redemption are woven together seamlessly, thanks to Kamal Haasan’s commanding presence. His portrayal of Sakthivel’s struggles and triumphs is both authentic and compelling, making his performance truly unforgettable.

Simbu’s portrayal of Amaran is commendable, capturing the character’s emotional depth and conflicted loyalties. His performance is particularly strong in scenes where he grapples with his desire for revenge and his bond with Sakthivel. However, his character’s importance diminishes as he becomes embroiled in a rivalry with his adoptive father.

Trisha’s character feels like an additionl, sparking controversy and detracting from the film’s core narrative. Abirami, on the other hand, delivers a solid performance as Jeeva, bringing warmth and depth to her character.

The supporting cast, including Naseer, Joju George, and Bhagavathi Perumal, make a lasting impact with their nuanced performances. Aishwarya Lakshmi shines in her limited screen time as Simbu’s sister, leaving a lasting impression.

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, featuring actors like Ashok Selvan, Mahesh Manjrekar, and others. While they make brief appearances, their roles are largely inconsequential to the main plot.

Ravi K. Chandran’s cinematography is exceptional, elevating the film to international standards. The action sequences, chase scenes, and picturesque locations in Delhi, Nepal, and Thiruchendur are beautifully captured. Srikanth Prasad’s editing ensures a smooth and engaging narrative.

A.R. Rahman’s music is a highlight, with memorable songs like “Jingu Jinguchan,” “Sugar Baby,” “Anju Vannapoove,” “Mutham Mazhai,” and “Vinvelli Nayaga” that complement the film’s tone. The background score is equally impressive, adding depth to the narrative.

The film marks a significant collaboration between Maniratnam and Kamal Haasan, who team up 38 years after their last project. The story is a complex exploration of the gangster world, delving into themes of loyalty, betrayal, and redemption.

Maniratnam’s direction is masterful, bringing out the best in the cast and technical crew. The film’s emotional depth and grandeur are well-balanced, making it a compelling watch. Kamal Haasan delivers a powerful performance, bringing nuance and complexity to his character.

“Thug Life” movie exemplifies the timeless synergy between Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan, yielding a cinematic masterpiece that, despite its familiar narrative contours, is elevated by outstanding performances, technical finesse, and profound emotional resonance.
