VARUNAN (GOD OF WATER) Movie Review by MATHIOLI RAJAA

“Varunan” movie produced by Karthick Sreedaran under the banner of Yakkai Films, Directed by Jaayavelmurugun, Starring by Dhushyanth Jayaprakash, Priyadharsan, Shankarnag, Maheshwari Haripriya, Gabriela, Radharavi, Jiva Ravi, Charanraj & Many Others.

In the Royapuram area of North Chennai, Radharavi (Ayyavu) and Charanraj (John) are business persons who sell water cans. Dushyant Jayaprakash (Thillai) works for Radharavi, delivering water cans. On the other hand, Charanraj’s wife, Maheswari (Rani), and her brother, Shankarnag vijayan (Dabba), sell water cans along with sundakanji (illicit arrack) a local snack.

Meanwhile, Jiva Ravi, a prohibition police officer, keeps a close eye on them. Amidst this, Dushyanth Jayaprakash falls in love with Gabriela. In this situation, frequent clashes occur between the two groups. What happens next? What is the backstory behind these clashes? The rest of the story forms the crux of the film.

The film depicts a gangster story revolving around the water can business, where two groups clash, and water cans play a crucial role. The film begins and ends with the voice of Sathyaraj as Lord Varuna.

Dushyanth Jayaprakash delivers a realistic performance and has transformed into a North Chennai boy. Kebrilla’s character is limited, but Radharavi and Charanraj have utilized their experience to deliver good performances. Maheswari shines as a North Chennai woman, while Shankarnag vijayan, who plays her brother, has performed villainously.

One more young pair is Priyadharsan (Marudhu) and Haripriya (Agni) Initially Thillai and Marudhu is opposite and they become closer. Priyadarshan and Haripriya justified their roles. Hyde Karty (Heightu) he did good job. Jiva Ravi plays as a policeman he carried a typical character and delivered excellent performance.

The other characters in the film have also worked hard to deliver their best performances. Srirama Santhosh’s Cinematography showcases North Chennai in a grand manner. Bobo Shashi’s Music makes the songs rhythmic and enjoyable. The background score is also great.

Director Jaayavelmurugun neglects to exploit the avarice of his characters to amplify the narrative’s tension, thereby relinquishing a pivotal opportunity to craft a more compelling plot. Rather than harnessing Dabba and Rani’s cupidity to propel the conflict, their subplot stagnates, devolving into an inconsequential cycle of illicit arrack transactions and ineffectual admonitions from John.

The narrative endeavors to portray John as the epicenter of power, but feeble writing undermines this aspiration, failing to establish a coherent hierarchy within his organization. Consequently, the rivalry and territorial disputes dissipate into obscurity, leaving the audience uncertain about the distribution of authority and decision-making processes within John’s team, ostensibly the aggressors, while Ayyavu’s faction remains inexplicably pacifist.

Furthermore, the film’s visual vernacular, replete with gratuitous cowboy-style shots and repetitive close-ups, fails to elevate the narrative, instead rendering Ayyavu a static, one-dimensional figure, whose purported ‘big shot’ status is consistently undermined by his passive role in the plot.

Varunan movie is mixture of love, violence, sentiments, friendship. Fight between two teams for can water supply. Made with template format. Fully focused on youngsters entertainment.
